Verses on the Heart of Dependent Origination

[NJDO-I] །རྒྱ་གར་སྐད་དུ། པྲ་ཏི་ཏྱ་ས་མུ་ཏཔ་ད་ཧྲི་ད་ཡ་ཀཱ་རི་ཀཱ།
In the language of India: pratītyasamutpāda hṛdaya kārikā
[NJDO-T] །བོད་སྐད་དུ། རྟེན་ཅིང་འབྲེལ་པར་འབྱུང་བའི་སྙིང་པོའི་ཚིག་ལེའུར་བྱས་པ།
In the language of Tibet: རྟེན་ཅིང་འབྲེལ་པར་འབྱུང་བའི་སྙིང་པོའི་ཚིག་ལེའུར་བྱས་པ།
[NJDO-H] འཇམ་དཔལ་གཞོན་ནུར་གྱུར་པ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ།
Homage to Mañjuśrī, the Youthful!
[NJDO-1] ། ཡན་ལག་བྱེ་བྲག་བཅུ་གཉིས་གང། །ཐུབ་པས་རྟེན་འབྱུང་གསུངས་དེ་དག །ཉོན་མོངས་ལས་དང་སྡུག་བསྔལ་དང། །གསུམ་པོ་དག་ཏུ་ཟད་པར་འདུས།
These different links, twelve in number,
Which Buddha taught as dependent origination,
Can be summarized in three categories:
Mental afflictions, karma and suffering.
[NJDO-2] །དང་པོ་བརྒྱད་དང་དགུ་ཉོན་མོངས། །གཉིས་དང་བཅུ་པ་ལས་ཡིན་ཏེ། །ལྷག་མ་བདུན་ཡང་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཡིན། །བཅུ་གཉིས་ཆོས་ནི་གསུམ་དུ་འདུས།
The first, eighth and ninth are afflictions,
The second and tenth are karma,
The remaining seven are suffering.
Thus the twelve links are grouped in three.
[NJDO-3] །གསུམ་པོ་དག་ལས་གཉིས་འབྱུང་སྟེ། །གཉིས་ལས་བདུན་འབྱུང་་བདུན་ལས་ཀྱང། །གསུམ་འབྱུང་སྲིད་པའི་འཁོར་ལོ་དེ། །ཉིད་ནི་ཡང་དང་ཡང་དུ་འཁོར།
From the three the two originate,
And from the two the seven come,
From seven the three come once again—
Thus the wheel of existence turns and turns.
[NJDO-4] །འགྲོ་ཀུན་རྒྱུ་དང་འབྲས་བུ་སྟེ། །འདི་ལ་སེམས་ཅན་ཅི་ཡང་མེད།
All beings consist of causes and effects,
In which there is no ‘sentient being’ at all.
[NJDO-5] །སྟོང་པ་ཁོ་ནའི་ཆོས་རྣམས་ལས། །སྟོང་པའི་ཆོས་རྣམས་འབྱུང་བ་ཟད། །བདག་དང་བདག་གི་མེད་པའི་ཆོས།
From phenomena which are exclusively empty,
There arise only empty phenomena.
All things are devoid of any ‘I’ or ‘mine’.
[NJDO-6] །ཁ་ཐོན་མར་མེ་མེ་ལོང་རྒྱ། །མེ་ཤེལ་ས་བོན་སྐྱུར་དང་སྒྲས། །ཕུང་པོ་ཉིང་མཚམས་སྦྱོར་བ་ཡང། །མི་འཕོ་བར་ཡང་མཁས་རྟོགས་བྱ།
Like a recitation, a candle, a mirror, a seal,
A magnifying glass, a seed, sourness, or a sound,
So also with the continuation of the aggregates—
The wise should know they are not transfer
[NJDO-7] །ཤིན་ཏུ་ཕྲ་བའི་དངོས་ལ་ཡང། །གང་གིས་ཆད་པར་རྣམ་བརྟགས་པ༏ །རྣམ་པར་མི་མཁས་དེ་ཡིས་ནི། །རྐྱེན་ལས་བྱུང་བའི་དོན་མ་མཐོང།
Then, as for extremely subtle entities,
Those who regard them with nihilism,
Lacking precise and thorough knowledge,
Will not see the actuality of conditioned arising
[NJDO-8] །འདི་ལ་གསལ་བྱ་གང་ཡང་མེད། །གཞག་པར་བྱ་བ་ཅི་ཡང་མེད། །ཡང་དག་ཉིད་ལ་ཡང་དག་བལྟ། །ཡང་དག་མཐོང་ན་རྣམ་པར་གྲོལ། །
In this, there is not a thing to be removed,
Nor the slightest thing to be added.
It is looking perfectly into reality itself,
And when reality is seen, complete liberation.
[NJDO-C] རྟེན་ཅིང་འབྲེལ་པར་འབྱུང་བའི་སྙིང་པོའི་ཚིག་ལེའུར་བྱས་པ། །སློབ་དཔོན་འཕགས་པ་ཀླུ་སྒྲུབ་ཀྱིས་མཛད་པ་རྫོགས་སོ། །
This concludes the verses on ‘The Heart of Dependent Origination’ composed by the teacher Ārya Nāgārjuna.
